A Member of the Wedding

When Sebastian was five years old, he was asked to participate in a wedding. The bride had known him for a while and he was especially fond of her. She had deep auburn hair and golden skin. He was always drawn to warm complexions—she was his type.

Seb was the llama who was famous for “kissing” at the National Western Stock Show when he was young. I had taken a couple of llamas to show and his reputation seemed to spread magically by word of mouth. All day long people showed up at his stall and asked, “Is this the kissing llama?” By mid-afternoon, I wasn’t flattered anymore. I was tired, but Sebastian was not. I stopped going into the pen and instead, I sent strangers in alone.

“Yes, go on in. Keep your hands at your side,” I said. Unfailingly, he stopped eating and raised his ears, as if this unique person was the most interesting and beautiful person in the world. He leaned close to smell their breath and then wiggled his nose with a soft mumble. The visitors were spellbound, each one thinking they were special. He took his job as good will ambassador seriously.

So, when he was asked to be ring bearer for this wedding, I agreed and didn’t think much about it. I knew he would love it. Of course I made him a matching cummerbund. I think that’s the approved wedding apparel for llamas. The wedding was a couple of hours away in the Colorado Mountains. I splurged and rented a van so we didn’t have to take the truck and trailer. Besides, we didn’t need much room. We packed our good clothes, a few dogs, and snacks for all of us. Sebastian stepped right in and found a good place to cush in back, and we were off. Sebastian was always up for a trip. He didn’t mind separating from the herd and was endlessly curious and very polite.

The remote mountain resort where the wedding was being held was at the end of a winding road through a pine forest. The parking area had more trees than cars and just beyond was a gracious log and stone lodge with an inviting front porch that ran the length of the building. The wedding party stayed in log cabins that were sprinkled through the trees and a white tent was ready for the reception. What I particularly loved about the place was the outdoor spot where the actual ceremony would take place. There were rows of would-be pews; logs split in half as benches with an aisle down the center. In front there was a huge, rustic log archway that had the abstract shape of a church. It framed a huge meadow that tapered in the distance in between two snow-capped mountains. A dozen horses grazed in tall grass and wildflowers. The breeze ambled through stands of Aspen trees. Hundreds of acres felt intimate and sacred. It was meant to reflect a church without walls.
